Newly licensed drivers: what does the legislation say?
It is important to know the laws concerning novice drivers, as our rental rules are based on it.
Briefly, Italian law defines ” newly licensed driver” as a person who has been obtaining a driver’s license for less than 3 years, regardless of his or her age. For newly licensed drivers, there are specific limits regarding vehicle power, speed, and alcohol blood level.
- Vehicle power limits: newly licensed drivers may not drive vehicles with a power-to-weight ratio of more than 55 kW (75 hp) per ton. In any case, the vehicle cannot have more than 70 kw (95 hp) for cars up to 3,500 kg (7716,179 lbs), during the first year of the license.
- Speed limits: during the first three years after obtaining a driver’s license, newly licensed drivers must adhere to the following speed limits: 100 km/h (62.1 miles per hour) on highways and 90 km/h (55.9 miles per hour) on main suburban roads.
- Blood alcohol content limits: Italian law is very strict about alcohol while driving. New drivers must observe the limit of zero grams (0.00 oz) of alcohol per liter (0.95 qt) of blood. Therefore, it is essential not to consume alcohol at all before driving, in order not to endanger one’s own life and others’ and avoid heavy administrative and criminal penalties.
