Piana degli Albanesi, a town that is reflected on the lake

Piana degli Albanesi

Hi I’m Jonas,

a university student. I live in Palermo, a big and chaotic city; in my free time I go in search of tranquility. I really like to go to the discovery of villages and villages near here in the company of my girlfriend.

This weekend we went to Piana degli Albanesi, a beautiful village that rises next to a lake; a perfect setting to spend a quiet weekend between nature and traditions.

Piana degli Albanesi is a town bordered by high mountains, built in a basin next to a lake and entirely surrounded by nature.

The journey to get to the town is a breath of fresh air, it almost seems like entering a painting by Monet, vineyards and olive groves color the landscape with typically autumnal colors.

The village of Piana degli Albanesi integrates very well into this landscape. Its urban fabric dates back to the late Middle Ages; full of stone fountains and alleys perfectly maintained over time.

It was founded in the second half of the fifteenth century, following the bloody Turkish invasion of the Balkan peninsula, by a small group of Albanian refugees looking for a refuge on the southern coasts of Italy.

Today the Albanian origin of this beautiful town is very present, both in some customs and in the spoken dialect and it is one of the most important Albanian colonies in Sicily.

The country is rich in traditions and culture, if you like you can take a trip to the Nicola Barbato Civic Museum where you will find much of the history that has characterized the country.

Then stop in one of the numerous inns of products of the Pianese gastronomy: the renowned bread (produced with durum wheat flour and cooked in the traditional round shapes in ancient wood ovens) seasoned with simple olive oil is a real delicacy. Let yourself be tempted also by a platter of cold cuts and cheeses produced entirely at kilometer 0.

Are you wondering if I will tell you about the famous cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi? Of course! I wanted to dedicate an entire article to him, click here.

Now that you have spent some time between history and traditions and after having filled your stomach well, it is time to go to the lake to relax a bit.

The lake is a great reference point for the town, a meeting place for young people and visitors to spend a quiet sunny day.

Autumn and spring are certainly the best seasons to enjoy the warm mid-season sun; A picnic area has also been set up with wooden tables and small barbecue installations where you can organize nice outdoor barbecues.

The area is well organized and there are also toilets and a small seasonal bar.

The lake is also an important reference point for sports tourism; during the year various rowing events and canoe competitions are held.

In addition to this, it is possible to go on wonderful horseback riding or just jogging by the lake.

Definitely a place to live to the fullest and to breathe deeply!
